Assistant Professor of Sociology

The Sociology Department at Randolph College invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position. The focus is open, but we particularly encourage people whose teaching and research concentrate on Race & Ethnicity, Queer Studies, or International issues.

Because we are a small department, we seek someone who can teach general courses like Introduction to Sociology and Social Problems, core courses like Theory, Methods, and Inequality, as well as courses in their own areas of specialization. We collaborate regularly with other programs like Media & Culture, Gender Studies, Comparative Philosophy, Psychology, and Political Science, so interdisciplinary applicants are welcomed.

We are seeking a colleague dedicated first and foremost to students and teaching, yet someone who is dedicated to service and research and committed to Randolph’s diverse and inclusionary environment.

The candidate’s responsibilities include:

*   Teaching 3 courses each semester (spread over two sessions in our unique Take2 curriculum);
*   Advising and mentoring undergraduates and supervising internships (after the first year);
*   Contributing to curricular development and administration of the Sociology department;
*   Participating in departmental and college committees (after the first year);
*   Developing and maintaining an active research agenda;
*   Incorporating undergraduate students into their research whenever possible.

Preferred qualifications:

*   PhD in Sociology or closely related field (African American Studies, Gender Studies, etc.).
*   Teaching experience (more than being a Teaching Assistant)
*   Record of research, presentations, and publications

We seek candidates who will contribute to a supportive climate for students, faculty, and staff of all identities and backgrounds. We encourage people of color, women, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and veterans to apply.

Applicants should send application materials to: sociologysearch@wuhubanjia.net Include a cover letter, a current vita, at least one writing sample (preferably a published article, chapter, or book review), a teaching philosophy, a statement about DEI and inclusivity in teaching and research, and a list of at least 3 professional references.

Applications must be submitted by October 13, 2024 to receive full consideration.
